Luckily, living in central Minnesota you can go about anywhere in the state to fish with a tank of gas. So that's what we did this week on the Rainy River.
With a decent weather forecast and sturgeon season winding down it was a pretty easy decision to head north. We arrived in Baudette and it was almost eerily quiet on the river. Driving by empty boat accesses, one after another. And as far as social distance on the water, you didn't have to worry about that as we only saw a couple boats the whole time.
As far as fishing, it was a pretty typical spring bite on the Rainy. Sturgeon, walleyes, sauger and suckers were all biting and we weren’t five minutes in before Hunter had a 51-incher on his line and his first sturgeon fight was on. As the hours went on we hoisted multiple fish over 50 inches with the biggest being just over 58 inches. And that makes a great day on the water anytime. It was my nephew's first time chasing dinosaurs and the river didn't disappoint.
Now it's time for walleye opener and Mille Lacs might get a visit from me in the near future. If the walleye bite is anything like this winter it should be a great bite. Good luck this opener weekend everyone!
