It was a story about the one that got away, but this time it happened in a more dramatic fashion than usual.

Sean McMahon was out fishing with his seven-year-old son, Dawson McMahon, in Florida's Palm Coast at dusk on Thursday, according to a video he posted on Facebook and reported by Fox 13.

The clip shows the boy fighting hard to haul in a bass while being given words of encouragement by his father. "You got it, buddy," Sean McMahon says in the 50-second video he posted, "it's all right, buddy. Keep going."

As he kept his eye on the prize, Dawson McMahon described the fish as "a fighter" and despite admitting that he was starting to tire from his efforts, still managed to pull the fish onto the grass at the shoreline.

However, his sense of achievement was short-lived because a stealthy underwater observer had other ideas.

Dawson coiled back in shock and dropped his rod immediately when an alligator suddenly emerged from the water to snatch the catch. The alligator then pulled his prey back underwater, taking the rod and line with it.

"Oh my God," Sean McMahon says in the video, although with lengthy pauses between each word which convey his shock. No one was hurt in the incident which he described in a Facebook post.

"Alligator Alert," he wrote, "Dawson caught a bass tonight and out of nowhere an alligator came up, Ate the bass and ripped his pole into the water."

Many posted comments praising the quick thinking of Dawson McMahon. "So glad he was smart enough to drop that pole," wrote one user.

"Woah. That gator has no fear of humans at all. Glad your little guy wasn't any closer when it grabbed that fish," wrote another user. Newsweek has contacted Sean McMahon for comment.

Another alligator incident in Florida that was widely shared on social media showed Eugene Bozzi, 36, capturing a large alligator in a trash can outside his home in Orange County.

The clip shows the reptile backing away while Bozzi approaches and he told CNN he acted to protect his children.

This prompted praise from the network's anchor Chris Cuomo who quipped that he was only able to pull off the maneuver because of his heritage, which he shares.

Describing the incident as "an epic showdown between a man and an alligator" Cuomo said on Thursday how Bozzi "had an Italian last name. "B-O-Z-Z-I, Italian blood. That alligator never had a chance."
