The 37th annual Interstate Mullet Toss at the famed Flora-Bama beachside roadhouse drew close to 30,000 people this weekend including visitors as far as North Dakota, and an 81-year-old who had “tossing a fish” on her bucket list.
“She said, ‘I can’t get down here with this walker,’” said Jenifer Parnell, spokeswoman at the Flora-Bama, said on Sunday about the woman’s appearance on Saturday. “So we helped her down there and she tossed a fish and did good.”

The three-day fish tossing, which occurs on the Florida state line of the Flora-Bama property, concluded Sunday.
Erica Johnson, 34, of Fargo, N.D., got to toss a dead mullet for the first time.
“It was awesome,” she said. “It was everything I dreamed of. I am glad I finally got a chance to do it.”
Johnson lived in Pensacola from 2010-2014, before moving north to a city where it was snowing on Sunday.
She said she was unable to participate in the Mullet Toss when she lived in the area years ago. But before her visit this weekend, Johnson had to attempt to explain to her North Dakota clients what she was going to do.
“My clients are hospitalists and doctors and they looked disgusted and confused,” said Johnson, a housekeeper. “I said, ‘it’s OK. It’s a good time.’”
Indeed, that is what the annual three-day beach party is all about, Parnell said. It started in 1986, as a way to draw people to the Flora-Bama during the so-called “shoulder season” between spring break and summer vacation season.
Parnell said the fish throwers range in a variety of ages, from little children to participants age 90.
Some throwers were first timers including Allie Holiday. She planned to throw a fish on her mother, Jamie’s, 45th birthday.
Jamie Holiday said she preferred to watch.
“My very first time here was 14 years ago and I still haven’t thrown a fish,” said Holiday of Gulf Shores.
