A Cambodian fisherman didn’t have to worry about talking about the big one that got away.

In fact, he very much reeled in his catch and now has the distinction of hooking a 660-pound female stingray — the world’s biggest freshwater fish on record.

Moul Thun was credited with catching the 13-foot fish near a remote island on the Mekong River 10 days ago. It took approximately 12 men to carry the monster catch on shore. Thun, 42, promptly contacted Wonders of the Mekong (WM), a combined U.S.-Cambodian research team.

MK’s team of scientists were flabbergasted over the huge catch.

“Yeah, when you see a fish this size, especially in freshwater, it is hard to comprehend, so I think all of our team was stunned,” WM’s Zeb Hogan said during an interview on the web.

So, which fish was the previous record-holder for world’s biggest freshwater fish? According to records, a 646-pound Mekong giant catfish that was hooked in northern Thailand 17 years ago.

A tagging device was embedded into the fish near her tail, then she was released back into the water.
