It was a real bad catch.
A man was fishing in Thailand when one of the fish leapt out of the water and got stuck in his throat.
The New York Post reports how Noppadol Sringam had been spearfishing in the country’s Phatthalung province when the incident occurred. He had dove beneath the surface in search of a good catch but had come up for air. It was at that the exact same moment a five-inch-long fish jumped out of the water as Sringam opened his mouth to breath, landing directly in.
Things quickly escalated from shocking to worse from there: According to NDTV, not only was the type of fish a species called Anabas—which has spiky spines that it uses to walk on land to hunt for earthworms—but it proceeded to wriggle its way down Sringam’s windpipe, cutting off his oxygen supply.
The same NDTV article details how Sringam was rushed to the hospital after others visiting the area realized what was happening where he underwent emergency surgery in order for the fish to be removed.
“Our physicians did everything they could to keep our patient’s organs from being damaged,” tells Sermsri Pathompanichrat, a hospital officer, to news outlets. “They have successfully saved the patient.”
And if you yourself are an avid angler and are now concerned that this could potentially happen to you, you can rest easy: Pathompanichrat informed the Post that this isn’t exactly a common medical emergency.
“The chances of this happening are very low,” states Pathompanichrat. “I have never seen this kind of case before.”
