If you’re of a certain age, you’ve noticed those pesky wrinkles appearing out of nowhere. Not only does it give your age away but it’s a constant reminder that your skin isn’t what it once was.

So, instead of buying expensive wrinkle creams and costly serums, you may be able to find a solution to help ease unsightly wrinkles and even get off them.

The thing is the key may be found in fish skin.

You may question yourself and ask, “Fish skin?”

That’s right!

According to a new study done by Oregon State University, the gelatin in the skin of Pacific whiting, an abundant fish on the Pacific Coast of North America, may help prevent skin wrinkling caused by ultraviolet radiation, Science Daily reported.

Heard of the fish? Most haven’t as it’s more popular in Europe.

Pacific whiting is caught in large volumes in the United States, but consumers have little familiarity with the mild, white meat fish also known as hake.

Jung Kwon, an assistant professor at Oregon State’s Research & Education Center in Astoria, Oregon, studies marine organisms and their potential to improve human health. According to Science Daily, she’s particularly interested in the benefits of parts of marine organisms such as fish skin, which many U.S. consumers choose to throw away instead of eating.

“Fish skins are an abundant resource that we already know have valuable nutritional properties,” Kwon said. “But we wanted to find out what additional potential value might be found in something traditional considered by a byproduct.”

As stated, wrinkling of the skin happens by chronic exposure to ultraviolet light, which breaks down the collagen of the skin. Researchers extracted gelatin from Pacific white fish and then looked at what impact it had on antioxidant and inflammatory responses and pathways known to degrade collagen and promote the synthesis of collagen.

In an amazing find, they found that the Pacific whiting skin reactivated to a certain level the collagen synthesis pathway that had been suppressed by UV radiation, prevented activation to a certain level of the collagen degradation pathway that had been accelerated by UV radiation, promoted additional antioxidant activity that can prevent or slow damage to cells and promoted additional anti-inflammatory effects.

But even though the fish’s skin can produce amazing effects on diminishing the appearance of wrinkles, according to Science Daily, Kwon cautioned that these initial results obtained in her lab are through a human cell model system, but further research is needed using animal models.

“We saw some potential with a positive response in the cell model system,” she said. “This gives us good evidence to take those next steps.”

So, if you’re looking to get rid of those wrinkles, you may want to consider the skin of Pacific whiting fish.
