CHEYENNE, Wyo. (PRESS RELEASE) - U.S. Marshals from the District of Wyoming, along with officers from the Shoshone and Arapaho Tribal Fish and Game Department, on Thursday completed a sex offender compliance operation on the Wind River Indian Reservation, home to the seventh largest Indian reservation in the country.
During Operation Jessica, which began Aug. 3, multiple teams of deputy U.S. marshals and tribal officers investigated 43 convicted sex offenders to ensure they are following their requirements and found 30 in compliance with the sex offender registry laws. The other 13 sex offenders will require additional investigation and could lead to federal prosecution.
“Sex offender compliance operations, such Operation Jessica, are one of the many ways we demonstrate our commitment to keeping our communities safe,” said U.S. Marshal Randall Huff of the District of Wyoming. “I am proud of the deputy marshals and our law enforcement partners for the work they did with these sex offender investigations, and for what they do each day.”
In the 15 years since the passage of the Adam Walsh Act (AWA), which established a national sex offender registration system called the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act, the U.S. Marshals Service has worked tirelessly to protect children and the most vulnerable among us. Since the AWA was signed into law, through July 2021, the Marshals have initiated more than 39,600 federal investigations and arrested more than 5,500 individuals for AWA violations. In addition, the Marshals have arrested more than 41,000 individuals wanted on state and local arrest warrants charging them with failure to register as a sex offender.
