In what was the largest volleyball crowd since before the COVID-19 pandemic, Seymour and Brownstown delieverd an all-out effort in The Pit on Tuesday night that had the fans in attendance energized from start to finish.

Whether it was a Kalee Borden kill to get the Braves faithful riled up, or an emphatic spike by the hands of Olivia Fish or Cali Cummings to silence the noise and get their own fans on their feet, there was never a dull moment.

Seymour took control of the match in the first set, sustaining around a 5-point lead midway through the set. But the Braves closed the gap, making it 20-19, forcing Owls head coach Angie Lucas to call a timeout.

The Braves took a 22-20 lead out of the timeout, and Lucas called a second timeout to try to rally the troops. Leading 24-20, Seymour managed to turn it around. An ace from Breanna Lawrence made it 24-23, and it was Brownstown head coach Jennifer Shade’s turn to call timeout.

Out of the timeout, Lawrence served another ace, evening things at 24. Lawrence continued her magic touch, finding a spot on right side of the court where no Brave was, getting her third-straight ace to put Seymour up 25-24.

A Brownstown error won Seymour the first set 26-24.

“She’s done that multiple times for us and it’s so impressive,” Lucas said of Lawrence. “For her to stand back there as a sophomore under that kind of pressure and serve, it’s really fantastic. I thought Bre played really well tonight.”

For Shade, what went wrong at the end of the first set is going to be the key in practice this week.

“It was disappointing,” Shade said. “We fought really hard to comeback from that deficit we had. We’ve gotta learn when it gets that tight, how to learn to put that ball away and be done with the set.”

In the second set, Fish had a monster kill that carried a little bit more meaning to it than just putting Seymour up 5-3. Fish broke the single season kill record in Seymour school history that was previously held by Megan Stout. Fish’s broke the record with kill No. 394 this season.

“It’s something that she and I have been talking about for awhile,” Lucas said. “It was very special.”

Seymour was leading 20-14 in the second set, but Brownstown once again refused to go away. The Braves made it 20-18 and Lucas called timeout.

“We didn’t pass well,” Lucas said. “When we don’t pass well, it just doesn’t click well. You can see we’re just always hitting out of system.”

But the Owls were able to recover. Fish had a kill that made it 24-19, and then an attacking error from Kinzee Dean gave the Owls the set 25-19.

The third set was much like the first two — a back-and-forth battle.

The Owls were leading 11-9 before pulling away a bit, taking a 20-13 lead.

There was no Braves comeback in the third set though, and Seymour was able to complete the sweep 26-24, 25-19, 25-19.

Despite losing, Shade was pleased with the intensity her team brought to the match.

“Our goal was to come out with a little fire,” Shade said. “We know we got to get into that sectional mode. I did like that we came out with a bit of fire tonight, and even when we got down, we didn’t fold.”

The Braves finished the night with 37 kills with Kelsey Wischmeier leading the team with 12, Borden with 11 and Reagan Nuss with 6. Nuss also served an ace on the night, as well as Emily Singleton to help account for the Braves’ 4 aces.

As for Seymour, Fish led them with 17 kills, Cummings had 8 and Lawrence had 2. The Owls had 32 kills as a team.

Lawrence served the 3 aforementioned aces, and Paige Lawrence also served 3 aces. Seymour only missed one serve on the night and was 72-73 with 6 aces.

Fish led the Owls in digs with 13 and Addi Lemon had 31 assists. Seymour is now 23-4 on the season and has won 14-straight matches.

“They’re just really, really fun team to coach,” Lucas said. “They like one another and they work well together. It’s really just the chemistry on this team that is what is making this happen.”

Tuesday’s night match was also Senior Night for the Braves, who honored Wischmeier, Nuss, Zori Otting, Emily Singleton, Erin Singleton and manager Chloe Covert before the match.

“I hate losing seniors,” Shade said. “Usually you have kids in this program for four years, and usually I work with them before that, but you get close to them and you learn about them more than players. Everybody takes a little bit of Brownstown with them and they leave a little bit of what they’ve done to help build this program on the court. It’s just awsome.”

The Owls’ freshman team won their match as well 25-16, 25-24, and Seymour’s JV tean won in two sets 25-22, 25-21.

Brownstown will be back in action on Oct. 4 when the Braves take on Scottsburg.

As for Seymour, the Owls will play again on Saturday at home against Jennings County.
