It may be time to cash in your chips if you have one of these two Doritos products. Frito-Lay has issued a voluntary recall of certain lots of its 14.5-ounce and 1-ounce Doritos Nacho Cheese Flavored Tortilla Chips, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This was due to a “soy what” and a “not read em’ and wheat” situation. These products may have soy and wheat ingredients that aren’t listed on the package, which can be a big problem for those with allergies or hypersensitivity to such ingredients.

Again, this isn’t a total recall. So it’s important to check your package—meaning your Doritos package. The 1-ounce Doritos Nacho Cheese Flavored Tortilla Chips affected have the following three things on their packages: a Universal Product Code of “0 28400 09089 6,” a “Guaranteed Fresh Date” of September 26, 2023 and a Manufacturing Code/ Time Stamp of “465218034 X 22:47 - 22:54.”

Meanwhile, the 14.5-ounce Doritos Nacho Cheese Flavored Tortilla Chips Party Size affected should have a UPC of “0 28400 51779 9”, a “Guaranteed Fresh Date” of September 26, 2023 and a Manufacturing Code/Time Stamp of either “465218037 X 22:47 - 22:59” or “465218137 X 23:00 - 23:06.” The only retail stores selling these specific lots have been located in Pennsylvania. These affected products were also made available in other places such as various foodservice locations and vending machines as early as June 29, 2023.

This is a nacho not so large recall. The number of products affected shouldn’t exceed 7,000. There haven’t been any allergic reactions reported so far either.

Nonetheless, it will important to heed this recall. Soy and wheat allergies are among the most common food allergies for infants and children. Although many kids end up outgrowing such allergies by three years of age for soy and by 12 years of age for wheat, food allergies can potentially emerge at and persist through any age. Symptoms can range from gastrointestinal disturbances such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting to respiratory issues such as wheezing and trouble breathing to skin issues such as hives and itching to dizziness, lightheadedness and fainting tingling sensations to swelling of various body parts. And these aren’t the good kinds of tingling and swelling. Symptoms can also range from being mild to severe such as life-threatening anaphylaxis.

One thing to be careful about is cross-contamination. So, if you’ve put these chips on something else whether it’s your cutting board, your utensils, your other food, your pillowcase, or your shoulder, you may want to either clean or throw away such things. The soy or wheat ingredients could have rubbed off on them as well.

So, if you or any of your apartment, condo, house or cave mates have a soy or wheat allergy, make sure that you don’t have the Doritos affected by the recall. If you do have them, either discard the products or return them for a refund, unless you are a “gluten” for punishment, so to speak. Even if no one in your household or cave-hold has such allergies, consider returning any products affected by the recall or at least clearly labelling them as soy and wheat products if there’s any chance that you may share such products with guests. You may want to hold a sick party. But not one where guests get sick.
