The crime scene was fishy from the start.
On Saturday, a large section of homes in Sayreville lost power after a fish was found on top of a damaged transformer, Sayreville Police Department Lt. James Novak said.
“The hypothesis is that a bird dropped it,” Novak told NJ Advance Media. “It just landed perfectly and destroyed the transformer.”
TAPinto Raritan Bay first reported the incident.
JCP&L reported the unusual outage to the Middlesex County police department. Power was restored about three hours later, Novak said.
“I said, ‘Let me put this on Facebook,’” Novak said. “This is a story that people are going to enjoy reading.”
A spokesman for JCP&L did not respond to a request for comment.
The police department’s lighthearted post on the incident urged the public to not forget the “victim in this senseless death,” referring to the fish, which they dubbed “Gilligan.”
“Gilligan was a hard working family man. He was a father to thousands of children,” the post read. “The suspect was last seen flying South. If you see him do not try to apprehend him.”
“Although he isn’t believed to be armed he may still be very dangerous,” it continued. “If you have any information in this case please contact Detective John Silver who handles all of our fish cases.”
