I found live fish dumped behind PetSmart: 'This is so sad' - New York Post

This is unreel.

A TikToker went viral for discovering a crate of live betta fish behind her local PetSmart in Idaho.

Katelyn Hahn, a user-generated content creator, said she stumbled upon the box of plastic cups while dumpster diving.

Taking to TikTok this week, she shared her baffling find online, claiming, “PetSmart literally threw them away.”

In a statement Wednesday to The Post, the pet company said the incident was “isolated” and “made in error.”

“Words can not describe how disgusted I am,” Hahn wrote while sharing footage of the dumpster dive, which has hooked 12 million views.

“This is so sad,” she said in the clip, showing viewers that many of the individual plastic containers for the fish had lost significant amounts of water.

“We are pet parents and nothing is more important than the health and safety of pets in our care,” a PetSmart spokesperson told The Post. “This was an isolated incident, made in error, which we sincerely regret.”

“We are using this situation to review store policies and procedures with our team to reinforce our industry-leading pet care standards,” the statement continued.

In a subsequent video, Hahn explained that she was rummaging through the trash looking for kibble or dog collars — “stuff that could have been donated” — but came across a box labeled “live fish.”

“I opened the box, and it’s just all these betta fish,” she said, describing how “disgusted” she was.

In a desperate attempt for help, she posted on her Snapchat story, hoping others would come pick up a fish.

She said she was eventually able to flag down PetSmart workers closing for the evening.

“They were in shock,” she claimed. “They didn’t know what to do, they didn’t know what to say, they were like, ‘This definitely has to be an accident.'”

The employees labeled the debacle a “mistake,” Hahn alleged, and the store took the fish back.

While Hahn would have liked to believe “mistakes happen,” users in the comments begged to differ.

Some alleged the popular pet store chain has tossed live animals “for years,” while others simply believed it was “not an accident.”

“They probably got thrown out again the next day,” wrote one viewer.

“They definitely already knew and decided to act like they had no idea. Definitely do your due diligence and go back. Check the dumpster again,” another advised.

The Post has reached out to Hahn for comment.

Other dumpster diving TikTokers have claimed to have unearthed live animals in PetSmart’s trash.

A woman said she found live hamsters, while another TikToker allegedly discovered an abandoned parakeet.
