Three more prize fish have been caught in the $100,000 Hot Springs Fishing Challenge, including a 9-year-old angler from Benton who reeled in a bluegill worth $1,000 on Saturday.

Harrison Fallon, 9, of Benton, said in a news release from Visit Hot Springs that he plans to keep on fishing and hopes to land another prizewinning fish in the Challenge.

Fallon and his father, Jonathan, were fishing off the family dock on Lake Hamilton "when Harrison cast his cricket too hard and fell into the water," the release said. "But he snagged the prize bluegill anyway, his third fish of the day. He kept the prizewinning tagged fish alive overnight in a fish tank and reported it to Visit Hot Springs' Fish Patrol Sunday morning."

After having his picture made with his prize, the 10th caught in the Challenge, Fallon said he planned to spend the rest of the day tubing and fishing some more.

On Thursday, Douglas Gates, of Cabot, landed the ninth fish caught in the Challenge, a $1,000 prize largemouth bass that turned out to be quite the challenge in itself.

"The day got off to a rocky start when Gates and his wife, Darlene, tried to start their boat for a day of fishing on Lake Catherine. The battery was dead, so they had to go buy a new one. When they did get out onto the water they fished for five hours without catching a thing," a VHS release said.

"Then their luck changed. Dramatically. Gates got a bite using a Blue Silver Square Bill Crankbait and he reeled in a largemouth bass. After reeling it in, Gates and Darlene noticed the Hot Springs Fishing Challenge tag on the fish. They had learned about the Hot Springs Fishing Challenge from emails sent out by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. To their surprise, they learned the bass was worth $1,000. It was a perfect way to end the day."

A third prize fish was caught Saturday by Richard Norton, of Texarkana, who says he'll cook the $500 prize catfish as part of the annual fish fry he and friends from Texarkana enjoy every year during their Memorial Day gathering in Hot Springs.

Norton's prize fish was one of a bunch he and his friends caught while fishing on Lake Catherine. It was the 11th prize fish caught in Challenge.

All of the Texarkana couples have been married at least 35 years, Norton told Visit Hot Springs.

Norton said he and his wife had bought some catfish for the annual Hot Springs fish fry, just in case they didn't catch any while fishing on Lake Catherine.

"They needn't have worried. The group caught a bunch of catfish, and Norton was so pleased he cut up his prize fish before he spotted the yellow Fishing Challenge tag and called the Visit Hot Springs Fish Phone to report his good luck," the release said.

Norton's fish was the 11th prize fish caught since the 2023 Challenge began May 2 at 6 a.m. after 66 prize fish were tagged and released May 1 into lakes Hamilton and Catherine.

The 2023 Fishing Challenge ends at 5 p.m. July 31.
