Thin Marlins lineup puts up 10-spot to beat visiting Phillies - Fish Stripes

For just the second time in as many months, the Marlins offense compiled double-digit runs, doing most of the damage in a single inning to turn a tense game against the Phillies Friday night into a laugher.

  • Kyle Gibson—5.1 IP, 8 H, 8 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 1 HR, 28.9 CSW% (76 pitches)
  • Jesús Luzardo—5.2 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 1 HR, 23.3 CSW% (90 pitches)

Jesús Luzardo faced an immediate deficit after allowing a leadoff home run to Freddy Galvis. From that point forward, however, none of the batted balls against him came close to leaving the yard.

This was Luzardo’s first experience forming a battery with Jorge Alfaro, who coaxed the lefty into frequently throwing his curveball. Luzardo established a new career high by going to that weapon 35 times.

In the bottom half of the frame, Jazz Chisholm Jr. sparked the Fish with a ground-rule double. He’s now hitting .315 (17-for-54) in his young career when leading off a game. Jesús Sánchez made it matter by blasting a three-run shot to right field.

Philly center fielder Matt Vierling evened the score at 3-3 with extra-base hits in the second and sixth innings. But the fact that Luzardo was still on the mound in the sixth represents a baby step in the right direction considering his initial post-trade struggles.

Gibson was extremely efficient with his pitches up to that point so what ensued in the bottom of the sixth cannot be attributed to fatigue. After surrendering a leadoff triple to Chisholm, he got bombarded by good situational hitting and sketchy fielding.

Miami regained the lead on a Miguel Rojas single, then essentially put the game out of reach in that same inning when Rojas added another hit to drive in two more. The veteran shortstop reached base safely in each of his four plate appearances overall.

The Marlins have averaged a preposterous 6.57 runs scored in games started by Luzardo (roughly twice as much support as they provide for Sandy Alcantara).

Steven Okert earned his first Marlins win and didn’t break a sweat in the process (one batter faced). Zach Pop (right middle finger soreness) pitched for the first time since August 10 and contributed a scoreless top of the eighth. Recently reassigned to the bullpen, Zach Thompson shut the door in the ninth.

This was the Marlins’ 35th win at LoanDepot Park. Meanwhile, it’s mathematically impossible for them to get that many on the road.

Saturday has the potential to be a much lower-scoring affair. Trevor Rogers will make his return to the majors opposing Ranger Suárez and his 1.48 earned run average. Play gets underway at 6:10 p.m.
